Just let a "tech support" caller into your computer?

Stay calm and do these three things right now, in this order:

  1. Disconnect from the internet. Unplug the network cable or turn off Wi-Fi so the scammer cannot get back in.
  2. Do not log into your bank or any other account on that computer until it has been cleaned.
  3. Change your passwords from a different device, such as your phone or another computer you trust, starting with email and banking.

If you gave out card or bank details, call your bank using the number on the back of your card. Then bring the computer in, or call 216-475-6000 or 888-7-WELDON. Read more in our Scam Alert: Nobody from Microsoft is going to call you.

Signs your computer is infected

Pop-ups that will not close, a browser home page or search engine that changed on its own, new toolbars or programs you did not install, a computer that suddenly runs much slower, friends getting strange emails from your account, or a full-screen warning telling you to call a phone number. Any of these is worth having checked.

What our virus & malware removal includes

For $99 we remove viruses, malware, adware and unwanted programs, and look for remote-access tools a scammer may have left behind, since those are legitimate programs that antivirus usually ignores. We make sure your security software is working and up to date, and we show you what to watch for next time. If the infection has damaged Windows too badly to trust, we will explain your options, including our Blue Package Windows reinstall ($190), which keeps your files.

How the tech support scam works

It usually starts with a phone call or a frightening pop-up claiming to be Microsoft, Apple, your bank or your internet provider. The "technician" asks you to install a program so they can connect, then shows you normal system screens and calls them proof of a virus. The goal is to get paid for a fake fix, or to get into your bank account. Microsoft will not call you, and a real warning will never ask you to phone a number.

Staying protected

Keep Windows and your browser updated, use real antivirus, and back up your files. Our Tech Support Bundle plans include Webroot antivirus and cloud backup, plus remote support hours if something looks wrong.

Virus & scam questions

Virus and malware removal is $99. If we find a hardware problem or something else that needs fixing along the way, we let you know and give you a clear plan.

No. Microsoft does not put phone numbers in warning pop-ups and does not call people about viruses. Do not call the number. Close the browser, and if the warning will not go away, shut the computer down and bring it in.

Disconnect the computer from the internet (unplug the network cable or turn off Wi-Fi), do not log into your bank or other accounts on that computer, and change your important passwords from a different device. Then call your bank and bring the computer to us to be checked and cleaned.

A scan is a good start, but scam sessions often leave remote-access software behind that antivirus does not flag, because it is legitimate software. We check for that as part of the cleanup.

No. Walk in weekdays from 12 PM to 8 PM at 5829 Turney Road in Garfield Heights, or call 216-475-6000 or 888-7-WELDON.
